James was born in Boston and passed away at his parents' house on the morning of his 31st birthday. He received his MFA in 1992.
Brown University
offers the annual James A. Assatly Memorial Writing Prize to "a graduate creative writing student whose work explores
issues of sexual identity, social change, and spiritual/personal dignity and embodies the qualities of personal
courage and artistic excellence which distinguished James Assatly's work."
